Tassie at Mission 2008 This year the Sr High Youth Group will be heading out to the Tampa, FL area to reach out to families in the area with our physical labor and our outreach. For one week in July our lodging will consist of college dormatories and our days will be filled with sweat, laughter, and determination. Our mission will start early in the morning on Sunday July 19 when the 14 hour road trip to Florida will begin. The only sustenance allowed in the vans will be Pringles and beef jerky (inside joke from last year’s trip). Our trip will take us to the Tampa Bay, FL area where we will stay at the nearby college in their dormitories. We will work on local home repair and community outreach in the area. Each day will begin nice and early, and we will work well into the afternoon. Each evening we will share dinner and devotions with our group and other groups from around the nation that are helping as well. After three-and-a-half days of work, we will have a day-and-a-half of free time. Some of which, I’m sure will be spent at the beach. Our return trip will once again begin early in the morning on Saturday for the return trip home. Fundraising EffortsNeedless to say, this type of trip is not free and it has always been my philosophy to not make the youth pay for the trip. In fact there are some youth that are able to attend this trip only because we are providing it at no cost to them. The only thing we require is their participation in youth meetings, fundraisers and attending church services as often as possible. But in reality, the cost per person is $375. This will cover the registration costs, most meals, gas, trailer rental and other expenses. The only expenses we expect that aren’t included are souvenirs and some meals on the free days. Group from 2008 Mission Trip I appreciate the outpouring of support that we have already received. As the youth sponsor, I have felt a tremendous amount of support by this congregation, and I want to share my thanks with you for everything we have raised so far! If you would like to sponsor one of our youth on this very meaningful trip, you can make your contribution to the Murphysboro UMC and designate it Mission Trip in the memo field. The cost for one full registration is $375, but any contribution would be appreciated. Thank you and God bless! -Troy |

It is our pleasure to welcome Rev. Larry Gilbert and his wife Teresa to our church. Effective July 1, Larry has been appointed to our church, and we are delighted to have him and his lovely wife. Larry and Teresa Gilbert Larry is currently the Iroquois River District Superintendant located in Champaign, IL. Before becoming a superintendant, Larry served as a local pastor for the Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale. If you would like to contact Larry you can email him at the this email address:

or you can send mail to their Vienna home at: Larry & Teresa Gilbert 1890 OLD METROPOLIS RD VIENNA, IL 62995
Teresa has continued to live in Vienna and Larry has traveled back and forth between Champaign and Vienna for several years, so I don't have to tell you that Larry is excited to be back in southern Illinois. Larry and Teresa will continue to own their home in Vienna, but they will be moving to the parsonage in Murphysboro. Larry told the Staff-Parrish Relations Committee that he would not be able to run a successful ministry from Vienna and that he and Teresa would be moving into the parsonage in July. While this appointment is bittersweet, Larry brings many gifts and talents to our church that will build upon the very successful ministry of Rev. Lewis. Our friends in Marshall, IL will certainly be receiving a talented and gifted team with Richard and Kathy. |

From water parks, outings at Little Grassy Camp, and reptile walks; our church has been having a blast at family events this summer. The turnout has been great and everyone has grown in fellowship with each other. A big THANK YOU to Nancy McNitt for organizing the events! Look for horse rides and other events in the future.
These events are great fun for adults and kids alike. All of us are the church family and not just those of us with young children. Be sure and join us for these fun events and become closer to your church family and your relationship with God. If you have an idea for an event for our family coordinator to consider, please email the church at
